the science
Plant derived Squalane comes from olives. Squalane is non-comedogenic (won’t block pores) and a natural component of human sebum. This assures that it’s quickly absorbed without greasy or oily residue, protecting skin against dehydration. It comprises three major antioxidants for youthful skin, namely, Vitamin E, Polyphenols and Phytosterols, for ultimate protection against free radical damage and restorative function. Emollient properties help it trap moisture to also keep skin soft and supple. Improved moisture retention also delivers anti-aging benefits, assisting to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
the packaging
The Olivarrier Fluid Oil comes in a sturdy clear plastic bottle with dropper. Note, the packaging has since slightly changed, identical except that it’s now presented in a tinted (still clear) brown plastic bottle. A brief information leaflet is included within the outer box.
the application
Apply 1-2 drops and pat to absorb.
the cost
Although the US Olivarrier site recommends this at USD$38, you can find it cheaper if you shop around. Often discounted at YesStyle (Discount code CLAYESSENCE).
the availability
Available at good Korean online beauty stores, I purchased mine at YesStyle (Discount code CLAYESSENCE).
the expiry
The product must be used within 12 months of opening and has a shelf life of 2 years.
the performance
The simplicity of the packaging reflects the minimalist style of this single ingredient formula. It looks elegant and is practical. The dropper is effective, doesn’t drip although a pump would be the only improvement I could suggest. The bottle has been upgraded since my purchase, now presented in a similar fashion but tinted brown. This could be to add some light protection to the oil or simply to modernise its appearance. I personally had no problem with the clear bottle, the oil retaining its efficacy throughout three months of daily use.
Olivarrier proudly displays it’s worry free approach to skincare on the outer packaging which indicates they are a cruelty free brand that using only safe, clean, vegan ingredients in their formulas.
The oil has a perfectly clear, water like appearance that is highlighted by the clear bottle. Of course, being an oil, it’s more viscous in texture. It has good slip and excellent absorption, sinking into the skin effortlessly. Although the recommended application quantity is only 1-2 drops, I tend to use half a dropper with each application and don’t find it overwhelming, greasy or heavy. It blends in beautifully with any cream with which it’s accompanied too so it’s also ideal if you prefer mixing oil with moisturiser.
This is highly compatible with the skin’s own oils making it perfect for any skin type. As someone with normal to combination skin, I found this an ideal layer both day and night. It’s particularly pleasant for those that don’t usually like oils in their routine since it lacks greasiness and weight.
Reflecting on product claims, the Olivarrier Fluid Oil is definitely lightweight and non-greasy. My skin feels satisfied and looks visibly plump after using this, the boost in hydration surely a benefit to the moisture barrier. Together with promised antioxidant protection, it’s a valuable inclusion to a routine focused on anti-aging. As for redness and blemish control, I don’t suffer these skin conditions so can’t testify to its efficacy in their management. However, a reinforced moisture barrier is less likely to invite acne causing bacteria.
the conclusion
Although blends are my usual preference, I have to conclude that this single oil is simply beautiful. Beneficial for all, vegan, cruelty free, clean and fairly priced, it ticks all the boxes.
