the science

Rose Flower Water is simply water scented or distilled with essential oil from the Rose plant (the hydrosol is steam distilled and more potent in delivering benefits). It exhibits soothing, cooling and anti-inflammatory properties, ideal for sensitive skin or that suffering acne, redness and irritation. The formula contains a substantial concentration of 75% rose water.

Next in strength is Butylene Glycol, second on the ingredient list. This assists to increase the effectiveness of other ingredients as well as thin the formula’s consistency. It also displays humectant properties, helping to draw moisture from the air back into the skin cells, adding support to more prominent humectants such as Glycerin and Betaine. Vitamin B5, Panthenol, is an effective skin penetrator, able to reach into the lower layers for deep skin cell absorption and effective moisturisation. It may possibly also provide anti-inflammatory benefits that can counteract acne causing bacteria.

There’s also a good amount of Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), a superstar ingredient that acts as a restorative agent, helps to brighten skin by inhibiting melanin production and is also an effective treatment against hyperpigmentation. Niacinamide can improve the appearance of enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, fine lines and dullness plus strengthen the skin surface. Also acting as a soothing and skin-restoring agent, Adenosine has proven anti-wrinkle benefits due to its ability to energize the skin’s surface, helping it to look smoother and younger.

Added for its hydrating capability, Sodium Hyaluronate is able to fill the spaces between connective skin fibres for a plumping effect. Similarly, Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans, Allantoin and Trehalose are included for their water-retention capacity, providing skin replenishing and restoring benefits.

There are a handful of botanical extracts in the formulation that deliver antioxidant, whitening, soothing, oil control and anti-inflammatory benefits. These include Mirabilis Jalapa also known as the Four O’clock Flower which is represented at the highest concentration. Among other, there’s also Gua Lou, Portulaca Oleracea, Centella Asiatica, Scutellaria Baicalensis, Green Tea and Licorice Root Extracts.

the performance

Sleek in appearance, the Commleaf Rose Sleeping Mask is typical of the brand’s rose line, elegant, pretty and easily identifiable. The tube is slimline and easy to carry or store. It dispenses in a very controlled way and retains transparency at the top and bottom to allow easy gauging of remaining product volume. The packaging is great.

There are also rose petal fragments (1%) within the product that give it a sense of luxury. The scent is unmistakably rose, however, as with all the products in this line, they are not artificially fragranced so it is a natural, fresh rose smell that is very alluring and refreshing.

The mask looks very much like a strawberry jam (or jelly as they say in the northern hemisphere). As such, it gives a sense of stickiness, however, in application, it’s silky without any sign of sticky residue. A gorgeous smooth texture means it spreads like a dream. Immediately after application, it does retain a glossy tackiness however, this dries down to a matte, comfortable finish within around half an hour. I usually layer this over oil and moisturiser for a heavy hit of overnight moisturisation. I apply the mask once these layers have absorbed, although if you don’t have the time or patience to wait, the mask sits well on top and seems to eliminate the need for drying time of previous layers.

Commleaf Rose Sleeping Mask Texture
The first couple of times I used this product, I saw no real impact. This is because I used it sparingly. In order to appreciate the moisture boost, a moderate amount needs to be smeared over the face. I tend to massage my sleeping masks in rather than pat or press, just a personal reference. (I do this with my oils too). I used this 2-3 times a week until finished and noticed my skin benefit with consistent application.

When I omitted the last step and didn’t apply this mask (but retained a consistent routine), I observed less bounciness in the morning. Using this product, there was a noticeable increase in skin hydration and balance. Although it is a little subjective, I think there was a slight improvement in skin brightness after a few weeks too. I can’t be completely certain as I use other brightening layers in morning/night routines that also contribute to my overall complexion. Nonetheless, my skin looks and feels healthier, a combination of better moisture retention and a general radiance.

Commleaf Rose Sleeping Mask
The mask could be universally suitable. It doesn’t leave any oily or heavy film on the face so would complement oilier complexions. It’s hydrating power also means drier skin types will appreciate its affects too.

the conclusion

The Commleaf Rose Sleeping Mask adds a bit of luxury to the end of the evening routine. It works hard overnight to deliver healthier, bouncier and more radiant skin by morning. Perfect CosDNA and EWG ratings also confirm a product suitable for all skin types.
