the science

There are four hero ingredients in this mask, all herbal extracts and represented at good concentrations, featuring in positions 4-7 on the INCI. The most prominent is Green Tea Leaf Water which is a potent antioxidant source that helps to protect skin from free radical damage, reduce inflammation, clear cell damage and repair wrinkles. Rich in Catechins, a group of natural compounds called Polyphenols (EGCG in particular) that protect against UV radiation and environmental stressors, green tea also helps to inhibit collagenase, the enzymes that break the peptide bonds in collagen, thus promoting skin firmness and elasticity.

An excellent source of Vitamin C, Lychee Extract provides anti-ageing benefits by fighting free radicals resulting from environment stressors and UV radiation. It also contains Oligonol which further strengthens the skin’s defense against ageing and helps reduce darks spots. Aloe Vera Leaf Extract can soothe skin and serves as an anti-inflammatory as well as acting as a moisturiser. Known for its healing properties, Centella Asiatica Extract (Cica) has been historically used in Asian medicine because of its anti-inflammatory properties. It can help to ease irritation and acne, stimulate new cell growth, build collagen and improve circulation.

Often coexisting in cosmetics, Cetearyl Olivate and Sorbitan Olivate together present a unique natural emulsifier derived from olive oil which reduces water loss and moisturises the skin. Also improving moisture content, humectants draw water into the skin and are well represented by Glycerin. Butylene Glycol adds a humectant effect but also helps to increase the absorption of other ingredients and hence boost their effectiveness. Sodium Hyaluronate can improve hydration of the skin through an ability to bind to water and fill the spaces between connective skin fibres, achieving a plumping effect.

Propanediol is naturally derived and used as an emollient to soften and soothe skin. It initially forms an occlusive film on the surface to prevent TEWL (transepidermal water loss), making it a great dry skin treatment. It also has a humectant effect, attracting and retaining moisture in the air into the skin.

Coptis Japonica Root Extract, (Goldthread) is an Asian herb cultivated to answer medicinal needs used to treat skin disorders. Goldthread (like Cocoa Seed Extract) is high in antioxidants and together with anti-inflammatory properties provides a soothing and hydrating effect to the skin. It has a cooling sensation that helps to decrease skin temperature and in doing so, better balance facial oils, reduce redness and deliver radiance. Goldthread is also said to protect against UV damage and photo-ageing. Similarly, Eclipta Prostrata Extract displays potent antioxidant and skin calming properties. Introduced for its antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, Coccinia Indica Fruit Extract is also an antioxidant. Collectively these attributes help it to balance the skin.

Finally, Dimethicone is a silicone oil that is used to provide a protective film on the skin to lock in moisture for long lasting hydration. There is also a minute amount of added Fragrance, the ingredient appearing last on the INCI.

the performance

The presentation of this mask is aesthetically beautiful. From the box it comes in with the textured matte finish and pretty Aztec-like pattern to the solid tub that holds the product, it resonates chic. It’s quite a different look from other more classic Heimish products. The tub itself is heavy duty, protecting the mask well, even when dropped (and I speak from personal experience!) The inner cap holds the spatula snugly while not in use. The mask itself gives off a very light, pleasant fragrance with a floral tone. Heimish claims a cedarwood scent which must be the tone of the added fragrance as there is no cedarwood oil in the formula. As it is the last ingredient on the INCI it is only likely to be an irritant to those with severe sensitivities to fragrance.

Heimish Black Tea Mask Appearance
The texture is as fluffy as it looks. It reminds me a lot of the mashed pear and apple I fed my kids when they were babies and feels a bit like that too. It’s very lightweight and airy, and spreads easily onto the skin, staying in place throughout the recommended brief wear time of 5-10 minutes. When it goes on the skin, there is a pleasant cooling sensation imparted which stays constant, sure to please those with redness issues. I didn’t experience any tingling or discomfort at any stage. A good amount of calming ingredients such as Aloe Vera and Cica are also likely to help ease inflammation.

The mask rinses off much better with lukewarm rather than cold water, ideally washed off under a warm shower. This is how I prefer to use it in the morning… cleanse, mask, shower and then follow with the remainder of my routine. It doesn’t leave any residue which is pleasant. Upon removal, skin feels softer and looks hydrated and a little fresher because oils seem to be better balanced. I can’t imagine a mask doing much more in such a short period of time, so I am quite impressed it delivers these benefits at all. Being such a short wear time, it’s an easy inclusion in the morning routine, to give your face a burst of freshness. It’s really lovely to layer serum over the top of the smooth surface it achieves.

Heimish also suggests an improvement in pore tightening to give skin greater elasticity. Personally, I saw a smoothing effect but didn’t really observe improved elasticity or a change in the appearance of my pores.

The results are not miraculous, rather, quite subtle. The texture of the skin just feels better afterwards. It’s smoother and oil balance is improved. I find this to be the best (noticeable) benefit of this mask. It’s abundant in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients so really has the potential to enrich the skin’s defense against environmental stressors and pollutants as well as offering some real soothing effects. But, is it on the face long enough to realise these benefits?

Apart from those highly sensitive to fragrance (or allergic to any of the other ingredients), this is a mask suitable for all skin types.
