JKosmmune Enzyme Cleansing Powder

the claim

The JKosmmune Enzyme Cleansing Powder claims to be a gentle, foaming facial cleanser uniquely formulated with 99.9% pure beta glucan and papaya-derived enzyme.

the science

Corn Starch displays similar absorbency properties to talc so is useful for collecting excess oil from the skin and preventing residual shine. It also provides a silky, dry after feel when used in powder based cosmetics. Corn starch has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties that help to soothe itch and calm rashes and burns.

Gentle surfactants are next in terms of concentration in the powder wash. These are added for their ability to help water mix with oil and dirt which allows impurities to be easily rinsed away. Both Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate and Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate are derived from coconut oil and added to provide a gentle cleansing and foaming effect. They are generally well-tolerated by sensitive and allergic skin types.

Signature ingredient, Beta Glucan is a polysaccharide sugar derived from various plants, yeast or oats. It’s humectant effect is supposedly 20% more hydrating than hyaluronic acid, locking in hydration, preventing moisture loss and ultimately reinforcing the moisture barrier.

Grapefruit Extract introduces ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) to the skin which helps break the bonds that dead skin can have with the living cells on the face for an exfoliating effect. Similarly, Papain is a plant based enzyme naturally found in the papaya fruit that acts as a natural exfoliator.

Prickly Pear Extract is recognized for its skin firming properties and ability to protect, smooth and moisturize. In addition to being antioxidant rich, it’s a competent humectant, displaying exceptional moisture retention to keep skin hydrated. It is abundant in vitamin E and antioxidants, making it a super skin food.

Also added for their water retention capacity are Betaine, Sorbitol and Allantoin which together contribute skin replenishing and restoring benefits. Aloe Vera Leaf Juice displays excellent anti-inflammatory properties. It is able to soothe the skin and protect it from free radicals whilst enzymes act to rejuvenate aged tissues and promote healthy skin. It’s a great detoxifier, able to remove dead cells, purify the pores and also act as a humectant, effectively increasing water retention in the skin.

the scent

There is a slight, natural scent associated with this product.

the cost

The 30 pack of cleansing powder sachets (0.5g each, 15g total) costs USD$33.00 whereas the loose powder comes in a 60g bottle and sells for USD$29.00, representing far greater value.

the availability

JKosmmune products are available at Korean skincare boutiques. I received mine directly from the brand.

the expiry

The powder must be used within 9 months of opening. I couldn’t find a shelf life date on the sachets.

the performance

Stylishly presented in the classic blue and white hues of the brand, these little cleansing sachets are highly portable, ideal for travel, easily slipping into a beauty case. The measure is perfect for a single cleanse, each one containing 0.5g of product. The lather has a mild scent that is the natural outcome of the formula. Nothing artificial is added to enhance the smell, just as I prefer. It’s a bit hard to describe but I would say it emits a slightly herbal scent which is not unpleasant and hardly noticeable. The brief, all natural formula is given the tick of approval by both the CosDNA and EWG resources.

JKosmmune Enzyme Cleansing Powder Texture
Easy to use, the fine grains need to be mixed with a little water to generate lather. Once exposed to water and the slightest friction, the grains simply disappear, dissolving easily and quickly to form a lightweight foam. The result is extremely gentle and fluffy on the face, delivering a lovely, light but luxurious sensation. Massaging it into the skin feels positively beautiful. It’s also gentle around the eyes, I experienced no stinging while cleansing.

JKosmmune Enzyme Cleansing Powder Solution
It rinses off very easily with a few splashes of water to reveal a clean and smooth surface. Once the dampness fully evaporates, skin feels fresh and bouncy with no sign of dryness or tightness. This is supported by a declared pH of 5.5 which I can confirm from a home test.

JKosmmune Enzyme Cleansing Powder pH test
The balance of gentle surfactants, absorbant corn starch, exfoliating enzymes, anti-inflammatory aloe vera plus humectants appear to deliver the ideal cleanse. My skin feels hydrated, oils neutralised and the surface bouncy, bright and silky. Water is retained in the skin surface, light exfoliation brightens the complexion and pores are refined for a smooth texture. Simply perfect!

I have only ever used one other powder wash, the By Wishtrend Green Tea and Enzyme Powder. I enjoyed the cleaning sensation but this left my skin a little stripped. So, given that one also uses the same surfactants and enzymes, claims a balanced pH yet left my skin a little dry, I was anticipating similar results with this one. I was pleasantly wrong. This JKosmmune powder left me speechless. It is so much more pleasant than I would have expected. I absolutely love it!

The only downside with the sachet presentation is the price. The 60g loose powder bottle (which equates to 120 washes) is USD$29 while these sachets that make up a total of 15g cost USD$33. I understand the packaging is probably less cost effective in production but it’s clear the bottle is great value for money in comparison, the sachets a good alternative for travel or a similar convenience.

the conclusion

Pleasantly surprised is an understatement when it comes to this product. I don’t normally reach for a powder cleanser but this one has made me reassess this choice. It is easy, effective and gentle leaving my skin hydrated, soft and smooth every time. Its natural, cruelty free and safe formulation also makes it an ideal choice for all skin types. I simply love it.
