The eight beans that make up around 80% of the essence include Black Soybean, Soybean, Carob Bean, Mung Bean, Kidney Bean, Lentil, Red Bean and Peanut. As well as being natural potent antioxidants which protect the skin from free radical damage, they also soothe, nourish, help eliminate uneven skin tone and encourage collagen synthesis for an anti-aging effect.
Other notable ingredients include Lemon, Peppermint and Orange Oils that contribute a hint of freshness to the scent, antibacterial properties and also add a slight cooling effect to the skin.
Standard hydrators include Sodium Hyaluronate, Glycerin, Polyglutamic Acid while Adenosine and Peptides enhance wrinkle care.
The essence is presented in a sturdy plastic frosted bottle with dropper opening and screw top lid. It’s very attractive, practical and hygienic.
Dispense a few drops into palms and pat gently onto clean skin. Follow with serum and moisturiser.
A 150ml bottle of the Blithe Vital Treatment, 8 Nourishing Beans Essence costs around USD$43.
The Blithe Vital Treatment, 8 Nourishing Beans Essence has a 2.5 year shelf life and must be used within 12 months of opening.
Firstly, I love the packaging! The bottle is sleek and sturdy and the dropper is perfect for controlled, clean dispensing. The essence is more viscous than water, and not runny. You can see pulp particles from the bean extract suspended in the liquid. These immediately and seamlessly dissolve upon contact with the skin, releasing Vitamin E derivatives, providing a fresh burst of antioxidants every time. It’s quite an innovative product.
There are a few essential oils in the formula that impart a mild and fresh natural scent to the essence, the prominent one being peppermint. It’s not a strong smell at all, rather quite delicate and refreshing. The essence sinks in rapidly and that absorption rate also reflects the time the scent lingers. It dissipates quickly so even if you don’t particularly like it, you don’t have to tolerate it for more than a few seconds. Personally, I like the smell of this product. Of course, if you’re sensitive to essential oils (orange, lemon and peppermint), you might want to patch test before using.
It has a light brown/toffee colour which is the result of the formulation, nothing added to enhance its appearance. I found it very easy to use and it cooperated well with everything I applied prior to and afterwards.
I use this after a watery toner, often twice a day, alternatively, I might use it to satisfy the toner/essence step. One layer is probably enough to provide my skin with what it needs, but it is the sort of texture that you can layer for both added hydration and moisturisation. It sinks in effortlessly without any tackiness or stickiness, even though it is medium weight, retaining more of a serum-like viscosity than an essence or toner. This texture is the reason it’s so comfortable to layer and hence makes it suitable for the famous Korean 7-skin method. Personally, I prefer to use lighter, watery product to fulfil this technique, finding 3-4 layers more than enough to provide me plump skin. For similar reasons, this may prove to be a bit rich for those with oily skin, the other Blithe Vital Treatment essences might be more appropriate.
The added moisture skin holds while using this product is evident. My skin clearly becomes more bouncy. It’s said to also help keep aging at bay although this benefit can only be realised over the longer term and not really noticeable to the eye after only a few months. Nonetheless, my skin visibly feels and looks healthier when I incorporate this essence into my routine, especially when used twice daily. It’s worth noting that the peptides in the formula are at the very end so present at fairly insignificant concentrations. If I was to rely on such ingredients for anti-aging benefits, I would definitely incorporate a serum afterwards and not expect this alone to build my skin’s resilience.
For those that enjoy essence in their routine, this is a must try product. It’s nourishing and a pleasure to use. It sinks in fast, without stickiness or tackiness and has an immediate positive impact on hydration and moisturisation. I’ve really enjoyed this esssence and would definitely recommend it for those with combo to dry skin.
