I’m From Rice

A brand inspired by traditional remedies to alleviate skin concerns and promising transparency, honest ingredients and materials without harmful additives, the rice line is one of the most popular by I’m From. Included are the toner, cream, serum and mask. Typically presented, all have consistent packaging, glass packed with paper labels making them immediately identifiable. The organic rice range formulae are also cruelty free and free of additives like stripping alcohols, fragrance and essential oils.
 
Rich in amino acids, fatty acids, vitamin E, B and ferulic acid, Rice Extract has anti-inflammatory and calming effects, tightening plus short and long term skin hydration. It’s great for sensitive and acne prone skin types.

With ceramide from rice bran extract, vitamins B and E plus minerals, the I’m From Rice Cream claims to improve tone, barrier strength and oil balance.⁣
 
Rice bran extract and oil are enhanced by powerful antioxidant Tocopherol (Vitamin E), emollients and humectants including Shea Butter, Glycerin, Synthetic Beeswax, Sodium Hyaluronate, Bisabolol and Vitamin B5, Panthenol. Adenosine contrributes proven wrinkle fighting capability while Ceramide NP together with fatty acids and alcohols help to strengthen the skin barrier.⁣
 
Both the EWG and CosDNA assessments return a favourable hazard rating for the I’m From cream, all ingredients classified safe/green.
 
The cream has a beautiful glossy white appearance and is quite dense although simultaneously soft and delicate to touch. It has excellent slip so glides across the face well without drag. Clean absorption means there’s not tackiness or stickiness. It works well with makeup and doesn’t interefere with sunscreen application during the day. It seems to have the right balance of fats such that it doesn’t feel heavy on the skin even though it’s buttery and sufficiently emollient and occlusive to trap in moisture and effectively soften. Benefits last between applications too, so it’s a great finisher across both routines, in all seasons. ⁣

Regarding product claims, well it’s definitely nourishing and moisturising and my skin feels better for using it. A strengthened barrier has helped to keep acne (caused by consistent mask use) under control too. Through barrier reinforcement, this cream improves oil control. I haven’t noticed any change in tone yet, but I tend to look to prior layers to provide these sort of benefits. From a cream, I mainly seek out the key benefits of moisture (both directly and through the prevention of TEWL) and barrier strength. This cream clearly delivers on both counts.⁣ This product is elegant from presentation to performance. It’s nourishing, moisturising and strengthening, making it a sheer joy to use. The I’m From Rice Toner is made with 77.78% Rice Extract which is said to enhance skin whitening and elasticity. The toner forms a protective barrier over the skin to prevent water loss, eliminate dead skin cells and provide luster and moisturization to rebalance dry and tired skin.
 
Included at almost 78% concentration, Rice Extract the hero of the toner. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) is a superstar ingredient that acts as a restorative agent. It helps to brighten skin by inhibiting melanin production and is also an effective treatment against hyperpigmentation. Niacinamide can improve the appearance of enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, fine lines and dullness plus strengthen the skin surface. Exotic botanical extracts including Purslane Extract and Amaranth boost the antioxidant strength, help cell regeneration and have a brightening effect. Again present, Adenosine help energize the skin’s surface with anti-aging properties.
 

 
Assessments returned by both the CosDNA and EWG resources are highly favourable.
 
The solution separates when idle. Around 78% Yeoju Rice water settles to the bottom of the bottle, the remaining 22% rising to the top lead by lipid rich Amaranth and Rice Bran extracts. A simple shake of the bottle ensures parts come together for even application. The milky tonic retains a very watery texture without noticeable scent. It absorbs and dries down quickly without residue. Botanical extracts give it a slightly “oily” slip and help the skin to prevent moisture loss. However, there is absolutely no sense of greasiness, oiliness or any occlusive sensation. The toner disappeard into the skin effortlessly for an immediate hydration boost and plumping effect. Two layers is more than enough to quench my skin’s thirst.
 
This product is more of a multi-tasker than just a toner. It’s sufficiently watery that it may be used as a first treatment essence but provides a concentrated level of hydration such that it could potentially replace serum. This toner alone does wonders for the moisture barrier although I didn’t actually notice improvement in fine lines or elasticity. It’s gentle, enjoyable on the skin and delivers noticeable, instant, long lasting results. I will definitely have this one back in my routine again and again. {Full review}.

The I’m From Rice Serum contains 73% Rice Germ Fermented Extract which retains more than 65% of the nutritional value in a grain of rice. Also rich in vitamin B and powerful antioxidants to boost collagen production and improve skin elasticity.
 
Rice Extract together with Licorice Root Extract, Niacinamide and Glutathione help to brighten tone by inhibiting melanin production and reinforcing barrier strength. Meanwhile Squalane, Panthenol, Glycerin, Allantoin and Sodium Hyaluronate deliver moisture to keep skin plump and hydrated. ⁣ Madecassoside (derived from Centella Asiatica) offers soothing properties to accelerate healing and repair and Adenosine is once again included to provide effective wrinkle care. Together with Portulaca Oleracea Extract which boasts excellent antioxidant properties to ward off free radicals, they assist to slow the signs of aging.There’s also silicones to help seal in moisture and give the serum an elegant, silky finish.⁣
 
The vegan formula again gets the tick of approval from CosDNA and EWG resources.

The pump dispenser is hygienic and the glass bottle elegant. The serum is glossy with good slip and absorption. On the skin, it feels simply beautiful. It plays well with other layers and didn’t cause me any irritation, pilling or problem of any sort. In fact, application is ideal.⁣

Regarding performance, well, I found this serum mildly hydrating, nicely moisturising and somewhat fortifying. It doesn’t seem to have a dominant strength, delivering on most of its claims but not in a very convincing manner. It is however, a very well rounded product that is universally suited to all ages and skin types. ⁣I didn’t see much brightening, but I also use other layers that offer such benefits so it’s hard to determine how much this serum contributed on that level.⁣ I went through the entire 30ml bottle pretty quickly with twice daily use – 6 weeks in fact which is twice as quick as most other serums of the same volume. It should be noted that I’m pretty heavy handed, using 1.5 pumps each time (3 total daily) so it might last an additional couple of weeks with single pump use. ⁣Definitely a nice inclusion to the I’m From Rice line although I’m not convinced this is something I need in my routine.

The I’m From Rice Mask is a scrub fortified with Rice Bran and Rice Powder to remove dead skin cells and impurities and restore the skin’s natural glow and translucence. Vitamins B1, B2 and rice water containing various minerals tighten loose skin and enlarged pores.
⁣ 

⁣As expected, Rice Powder leads an INCI that also incorporates humectants and emollients to help keep skin hydrated and supple, including Beeswax, Shea Butter, Squalane, Betaine, Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate, Allantoin, Vitamin E, Hyaluronic Acid, Beta-Glucan and a host of botanical extract. This results in a formula to nourish and brighten the skin.⁣ This is the only product that doesn’t receive an all green report back from CosDNA and EWG resources. The inclusion of Fragrance in particular, deems the product as a moderate hazard. Those with sensitive skin won’t be impressed with the further inclusions of Dimethicone and Alcohol.⁣

The mask comes in a paste form and contains rice derived grains to deliver an exfoliating effect. I found that the consistency of the abrasives varied a lot – good at the start, too harsh in the middle and almost non existent towards the end of the jar. ⁣They simply weren’t ground to the same consistency and not dispersed evenly throughout the product. Therefore, the masking experience changed as I progressed through the jar. As such, my opinion of this product changed with each use. Initially I really liked it – it seemed to have a good texture that scrubbed away dead cells gently but effectively to give me smooth skin and a brightening effect.⁣ However, as I worked my way through it, there were days when the grains were just too abrasive and I’m no wimp when it comes to a good scrub. They were just a bit too rough and sharp, certainly not something those with sensitive skin could tolerate, particularly combined with the added fragrance.

Thankfully my skin is quite robust. I didn’t put a lot of pressure on the massage to avoid skin damage. By the end of the jar, the remaining grains were like powder, few and almost ineffective. ⁣Perhaps I should have stirred the product in the jar before using it each time. I don’t know. The other thing that I didn’t enjoy was the wash off. This mask left a slightly greasy film after rinsing, even with very warm water. I had to rinse under a shower of running hot water or use a warm wet cloth to assist removal.⁣

I’m quite a fan of the I’m From Rice skincare line. The toner and cream are by far my favourite products in a line that’s vegan, clean and effective.
