the science

Fig Extract is rich in antioxidants, phenolic compounds which include gallic acid, epicatechins and anthocyanins. These help the skin’s defense against stress from environmental factors which in turn slows the signs of ageing. Fig is also a great source of hydration, effectively preventing water loss from the skin surface. Tyrosinaset is an enzyme in the skin which when overactive can be responsible for the production of dark spots. Fig is able to help neutralise this and hence improve skin colour.

Other ingredients that help to delay the onset of the signs of ageing through antioxidants include Tocopherol, Chlorella Vulgaris Extract, a potent source of carotenoids and Soybean Seed Extract which also acts as a soothing agent.

Meanwhile, water binding characteristics from Glycerin, Glucose, Fructose, Panthenol, Glycine Soja, Allantoin and Sodium Hyaluronate ensure good hydration. Finally, derived from sugar beets, Betaine Salicylate offers gentle exfoliation effects for a smoother, brighter finish.

Interestingly enough, there is also a fair amount of Diphenyl Dimethicone, a silicone that improves slip, texture and helps to retain moisture. Accordingly to Paula Begoun of Paula’s Choice, the large molecular structure of silicone is simultaneously porous and resistant to air. Although silicones remain on the surface of the skin, other ingredients they are mixed with will seep through. This results in a barrier on the surface which is breathable and unlikely to clog pores or cause acne, contrary to popular belief. So, it offers a seal to protect against water loss while also allowing the actives that follow to effectively penetrate. Additionally, silicones help ensure an even application of following ingredients while leaving behind a silky feel.

the performance

Packaged in the same consistent style as all the other brand’s essences and toners, this product comes in an elegant, sleek cylindrical bottle with a hygienic dropper opening that controls the amount dispensed well. The fig line is presented in pretty magenta hues reflective of the fruit.

The product itself is vegan and free from harmful ingredients, alcohol and fragrance excluded from the formulation. It has no scent attributed from the ingredients either. The composition gets an all green, clean bill of health from CosDNA.

The liquid is slightly cloudy in colour and the texture is runny but more viscous than water. A few drops are all that is needed to coat the face and neck generously. I usually apply 1-2 layers after cleansing and a watery toner. I have been using it every morning for the last several weeks and sometimes similarly start my PM routine this way.

It absorbs quite quickly and completely without any tackiness, stickiness or oiliness. Plenty of slip ensures this silky liquid glides effortlessly without any sense of tugging or tension. It sinks in completely with a little patting, although (likely due to the silicone content), it does leave a thin, just noticeable film on the surface. This sensation is eliminated by the skincare products that follow, so it doesn’t bother me. Additionally, as mentioned in the science above, this is a permeable layer that permits effective penetration of ingredients that come next. The immediate result is skin that looks visibly dewy and healthier.

When it comes to understanding how well a product prepares the skin for the onslaught of layers to come, my judgement is made upon its ability to hydrate. Deep hydration allows the skin to better absorb the next layers which means actives at the serum step will work better since they penetrate further. This product does a great job of fast, deep and complete absorption but it moisturises the skin more than hydrates it.

As far as fighting the signs of ageing, it’s impossible to verify this claim in a matter of weeks or months. However, continuous use will surely contribute to a slowing down of skin degradation since supple skin is less likely to sag and wrinkle than dehydrated skin. Furthermore, the abundance of antioxidants also goes a long way towards neutralising free radicals that can cause skin damage. So, yes, this is a great option for those seeking youthful, hydrated skin.

This essence is lovely in every sense. From its sophisticated appearance to its beautiful application and noticeable results. Gentle enough to please sensitive skin, it’s also nicely moisturising and able to be layered to quench the driest faces. Mature skin will additionally appreciate the ageing defense.

This beautiful essence has reinforced why I’m From continues to be one of my favourite k-Beauty brands. It has my tick of approval!
