the science

Comprising several exotic botanicals that provide antioxidant and soothing benefits to the formula, the one at the greatest concentration and often used in medicine for its healing abilities is Centella Asiatica or Cica. It can help to ease irritation and acne, stimulate new cell growth, build collagen and improve circulation.

Fig Extract contains high concentrations of antioxidants, omega fatty acids plus vitamins including A and C. In addition to helping neutralize free radicals, fig extract promotes exfoliation making way for renewed skin. However, according to Paula Begoun of Paula’s Choice, topical application can cause sensitizing reactions, making fig an ingredient to avoid in leave-on skincare products.

Due to strong anti-inflammatory properties, Honeysuckle is included to impart soothing effects, used historically to treat eczema, rosacea, acne and general skin irritation. It also boosts antioxidant protection and is known to improve uneven skin tone and dullness. Forsythia, Tumeric, Skullcap and Holy Basil Extracts display similar effects.

Aloe Vera Extract exhibits soothing properties and serves as a hydrating agent for skin. Polysaccharide is the active ingredient in aloe vera, an antibacterial substance that helps to kill fungi and bacteria whilst accelerating cell reproduction. It is highly effective because it penetrates the dermis four times faster than water.

Neem provides excellent skin repair and protection. It has natural anti-ageing benefits, shielding the skin against oxidative stress and ultraviolet radiation. It’s also a source of Vitamin C thus promoting collagen production. Natural antibacterial properties help to reduce acne whilst anti-inflammatory capabilities calm redness and refresh the skin.

Another antioxidant rich ingredient, Red Algae can be soothing, repairing, hydrating and nourishing and can provide natural UV protection.

Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate is the water-like result of the fermenting and filtering of yeast obtained from Himalayan purple barley. It contains amino acids, nucleic acids, peptides plus minerals and vitamins, all of which are the main components of the NMF (Natural Moisturising Factors), working together to optimize the skin’s natural rejuvenation process.

Contributing moisturising benefits are another set of plant extracts, none more than Ulmus Extract. This extract comprises water binding sugars making it a superstar moisturiser comparable to Hyaluronic Acid. It also has anti-inflammatory properties to boost the soothing capabilities of the mist. Allantoin enhances water retention capacity.

Also improving moisture content are humectants that draw water into the skin and ceramides to reinforce the skin barrier. Finalising the INCI are a series of botanical oils that nourish and moisturise. They include Moringa, Lavender and Avocado Oils. They help achieve the bi-phase formula.

the performance

The Keep Cool Fixence Mist is said to function as a makeup setter, essence and mist in a single spray. The soothe version is one of three offered by the brand (there’s also shine which acts more as a fixing spray and ocean to moisturise and improve texture). This one is geared towards those with irritated and acne prone skin. Although I don’t usually suffer acne or redness, I wanted to see if this spray had any effect on the oilier parts of my combination skin.

The presentation is super cute. The bottle is small so it’s ideal for popping into a purse, bag or pocket. It’s presented in lightly frosted plastic and the spray top screws off so you can potentially refill it. I plan to do this with the brand’s Soothe Bamboo Toner as this is one of its recommended uses. The cap helps to prevent accidental discharge. The mist itself is so fluffy and light. It offers perfect consistency, range and dispersion. It’s a subtle soft mist that caresses your face so gently. I really love the application. Three pumps are usually enough for full face and neck coverage.

Unfortunately, there is added fragrance in the formula, although the scent of the mist is fairly subtle and I actually find it quite refreshing. It has a botanical tone to it, the main smell I can identify being lavender.

This is a bi-phase mist that offers the benefits of oil in a water based product (water being the first item on the INCI and hence represented at the highest concentration). The oil sits on top and creates a green line as shown in the photo below. It comprises Moringa, Lavender and Avocado oils. As the last few ingredients, they are only included at low volumes so don’t give the spray any feeling of heaviness or greasiness. The oils are meant to provide lasting moisture while the water based component should soothe and refresh. The two components should be mixed together gently prior to application.

Once I opened this little guy, I found myself reaching for it all the time. It’s summer and it’s quite hot so I tend to overdo the spritzing at this time of year. In all honesty, I finished this bottle in just over three weeks. I leave it on my desk when I’m working and pick it up every hour or so for a three pump spritz. It’s not so much that the moisturising effect only lasts an hour, but rather that I am addicted to that refreshing feeling it provides. It helps to keep my skin bouncy and balanced. I can’t say I noticed a glow when using it but my skin certainly looks fresher throughout the day.

With respect to makeup setting, it worked well for me but it should be noted that I only usually wear light makeup. Those that apply generous layers of foundation/powder may get different results. It’s certainly worth a try in this capacity.

I can imagine that it would provide relief to those with acne because of the soothing plant extracts plus the cooling effect experienced upon application would also at least temporarily relieve inflammation and redness. Other than the added fragrance, it returns good CosDNA and EWG results. As such, apart from anyone with sensitivities to perfume or botanicals, I think it would be a great option for all skin types.

the conclusion

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this mist, even with the added fragrance. Although it is a bi-phase spray, it is still lightweight and refreshing. It offers a good hydration boost with soothing effects that I found quite addictive.

It’s highly portable and affordable as well as also being easy to include throughout the day, at toner step or as a setting spray. Love it!
