the science

Topping the INCI is organic Honey. Strong antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in honey make it a great cleanser while also protecting the skin and helping to prevent premature aging. As a humectant, it draws and retains moisture for increased skin hydration and suppleness. Halloysite Clay is a pure white New Zealand clay that enhances cleansing and exfoliation. It is effective at absorbing excess oil, particularly useful for acne-prone and oily skin types. It additionally assists the natural preservation of the product by drawing water and moisture away from bacteria. Colloidal Silver is basically small silver particles suspended in water. Able to cleanse, it’s also antibacterial so beneficial in the treatment of conditions such as acne. Exhibiting healing properties, it can help with scar reduction.

Able to rejuvenate and restore youthfulness, Camellia Seed Oil is rich in Oleic Acid (Omega-9). Furthermore, Vitamin A helps to activate the skin’s natural renewal process to visibly smooth and reduce the look of wrinkles and fine lines. Camellia Seed Oil also contains antioxidant Vitamin E which defends against free radicals and replenishes moisture levels.

Another of the hero ingredients in the product is Crushed Hibiscus Petal. Packed with antioxidants including Vitamins C and E plus Anthocyanins and Polyphenols, it provides a strong defense against free radicals as well as helping prevent spots and freckles. Able to assist with collagen production and boost skin elasticity, anti-ageing prowess has earned Hibiscus the nickname “Botox Plant”. A high mucilage content (a gelatinous substance that contains protein and polysaccharides) makes it a great moisturizer too. Hibiscus contains gentle acids that have a slight exfoliating effect on the skin. Natural AHAs encourage purification by breaking down dead skin and increasing cell turnover as well as assisting to control acne breakouts.

Zeolite Clay is a master of detoxification with a great ability to absorb, hold, release and exchange toxic matter according to what your body needs. Able to unclog pores by drawing out impurities, makes it an ideal acne treatment and preventative.

Maqui Berry is considered a superfruit due to its high antioxidant content delivered by Anthocyanins which makes it a particularly effective defense against pollution and sun damage. It also contributes to the mask’s deep crimson hue. Red Raspberry Seed Oil is a great option for maturing skin. It’s high in Vitamin A, boosting healing and repair activity. High levels of Vitamin E assist to prevent free radical damage. Together these properties can reduce collagen destruction, renew skin and keep it looking bright and youthful. Furthermore, high Linoleic Acid provides anti-inflammatory support and helps to reduce clogged pores and acne. Raspberry seed oil is completely non-comedogenic.

Wildcrafted Organics Wild Berry Masque Appearance
Strong anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antiviral properties in Elderberry Fruit Extract further enhance acne defence. Rich antioxidants (specifically flavonoids and anthocyanins) plus Vitamins A, C and E also strengthen the anti-ageing cause, supporting Maqui and Raspberry.

Neroli, Grapefruit Peel, Orange Peel and Lavender Oils impart antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties to help treat skin conditions such as acne. They can be effective at clearing congested skin and balancing sebum. They are mainly responsible for the sweet, distinctive citrus and floral (in the case of lavender) scents of the product. Limonene and Linalool which are derived from natural essential oils, also strengthen smell.

Additionally, there’s a small amount of Lactic Acid (AHA) in the formula which can exfoliate the skin, lighten dark spots and improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Overall, the formula is antioxidant rich with plenty of acne fighting and nourishing ingredients to protect, balance, polish and repair.

the performance

There are so many beautiful things to share about this product. Let’s start with aesthetics. The sophisticated opaque black glass jar is fitting for a mask that is so vibrant in colour and so rich in texture. The colours and appearance are simply gorgeous, looking and feeling very high end. Scooping the product out of a wide opening implies potential contamination, however, given the natural preservative and antiseptic function of the ingredients, I believe it should keep until finished. The product comes with a dispensing spoon, however, I didn’t receive this in PR so used a spatula from another mask without concern.

There is nothing artificial added for fragrance. The natural scent of this mask is derived from its composition, primarily contributed by the essential oils. It’s not at all overpowering. I actually love the smell – it’s a little earthy with tones of citrus and lavender as anticipated. The deep crimson colour is intoxicating, the beautiful result of natural Maqui Berry, Raspberry and Elderberry. The mask is not particularly dense, rather has good spreadability, its consistency resembling a cake batter.

Looking at the full INCI, this is truly a magnificent formula comprising 85% certified organic and wild harvested ingredients. It reads like luxury and looks the part too. It would be unfortunate to be sensitive to essential oils or allergic to any of the ingredients and be unable to experience it.

Wildcrafted Organics Wild Berry Masque
There is a heap of organic honey in this mask. I love honey in my skin care because of its healing, nourishing and moisturising power. It takes the edge off the clay content, reducing the likelihood of drying. I primarily use this as a mask, as I don’t want to waste it for cleansing, although I did try it to satisfy my curiosity and deliver a more complete review. It performs well to cleanse but I would only use it in the morning, not so much as a second step cleanser to remove the remnants of makeup, dirt and sunscreen. I prefer a lighter water based cleanser for this job. When used for cleansing however, it really gives your face a brightening effect and pick-me-up for a refreshing start to the day.

It doesn’t display effortless slip, so sliding it on the skin is improved by applying it to a wet face, as the directions suggest. It spreads well, leaving an even layer and deep crimson glossy finish. It doesn’t dry firm like typical counterparts and there is certainly no cracking at the end of wear time. By the end, it’s slightly firmer but never tight. As it does contain clay, as much as I am tempted to leave it on longer than the recommended wear time of 15 minutes, I refrain.

Wildcrafted Organics Wild Berry Masque Texture
To remove, I wet my fingers and massage it off one section at a time. The slightly gritty texture provides a gentle exfoliation which assists to deliver a brightening effect. It takes a couple of rinses with lukewarm water before the crimson ‘stain’ fully lifts but it comes off fairly easily. Overall, the ritual of application is very satisfying.

So to the results… I was delighted from first use. In additional to providing gentle exfoliation upon removal, this mask does all the things expected from clay and more. Pores are cleansed, dead cells are removed, skin retains hydration and facial oils are balanced. I don’t generally suffer breakouts so can’t attest to this mask’s ability to reduce such occurrences with continuous use as claimed. However, my slightly oily T-zone is nicely neutralised, suggesting it would be probable.

My skin feels incredibly healthy and fresh after use while my tone appears more even too, imparting a smooth surface, soft finish and noticeable glow. Needless to say, this mask of quality ingredients has quickly become one of my favourites.

the conclusion

When seeking a mask, I look for something comprised of high quality ingredients that will deliver visible results upon removal. This mask certainly fulfils this requirement. The benefits are many, the results are pleasing and the experience is immensely satisfying.
