the science

Kaolin and Bentonite are typical clays included in detoxifying masks because of their absorption capabilities. They are able to draw out impurities, excess oil, bacteria and dirt to achieve clear skin and clean pores. This makes them ideal for oily and acne-prone skin types. A high content of silica helps to remove dead skin and regenerate new cells without over-drying, resulting in a smoothing and brightening effect on the skin. This function is enhanced by Charcoal Powder which can extract excess oil, dirt and other harmful substances from clogged pores for good oil balance.

Natural oils are included for their ability to replenish and counteract the potential drying effects of the clays and charcoal. Rich in fatty acids, they assist to lock in moisture, reduce transepidermal water loss and help maintain a healthy skin barrier while also improving softness and elasticity. Emollients are assisted by Cetearyl Alcohol and include Sweet Almond, Argan Kernel, Sunflower Seed, Rosehip and Pomegranate Oils plus Shea Butter. Together with Vitamin E, they additionally exhibit antioxidant properties, protecting the skin from premature ageing. A solid dose of Glycerin contributes humectant properties to the mask, helping to draw moisture from the air into the skin.

Botanical extracts further strengthen antioxidant behaviour as well as contribute additional benefits. Just like White Tea Leaf Extract, Grape is a potent antioxidant that helps to improve elasticity and firmness. Grape is also rich in fatty acids, is anti-inflammatory and oil balancing. Centella Asiatica and Burdock Root Extracts are great soothing ingredients with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Ginseng Root Extract is able to balance oil production and also acts as a natural antibacterial agent. It can further reduce puffiness and acne as well as prevent wrinkles. In addition to being packed with amino acids and flavonoids, Bamboo contains 70% natural silica, an organic compound that assists to keep skin looking healthy, supple and radiant. By reinforcing the moisture barrier, it further reduces bacteria penetrating to improve acne and damaged skin. Finally Willow Bark Extract provides gentle exfoliation, strengthening acne defense and refining pores to deliver a radiant complexion.

the performance

⭐ BE BOLD, BE BRAVE, BARE IT ALL ⭐ so says the motto from Australian brand Naked Klay, a mother-daughter team with a genuine passion for beauty. ⁣They’ve created a range that focuses on balance and harmony achieved by seamlessly fusing science with nature. ⁣Their herb based range is inspired by Chinese medicine, not tested on animals and doesn’t include the usual nasties or fillers. This mask is also vegan. ⁣

Naked Klay 2 In 1 Detoxifying Exfoliating Mask Philosophy
First impressions are fantastic. How could they be anything else with packaging like this? All their products are packed in heavy glass jars with a plastic inner lid and cap, presented in a beautiful protective casing which comprises a foam lined cardboard cylinder. The timeless black and white theme is bold and modern. It certainly resonates with me! The only thing missing is a dispensing spatula, suggesting it’s safe to scoop it out with fingers. Nonetheless, I like to use a spatula (and have several lying around from other products) as it’s just less messy.

Naked Klay 2 In 1 Detoxifying Exfoliating Mask Presentation
The mask is typically grey, encouraged by a good amount of charcoal in the mix. The texture is creamy and soft, pliable and spreadable but never to a point where it drips or runs. It effortlessly glides over the face with fingers or a mask brush. Only a light coverage is needed for this mask to perform so the 100ml jar will last a long time. The scent is pleasant, imparted by natural ingredients. It has the obvious clay smell but softened with sweet earthy, herbal undertones. I notice it upon application but not so much when it’s drying. It feels immediately a little cool, so helps initially with inflammation issues by reducing skin temperature slightly.

The mask takes only around 10-15 minutes to dry, dependent on the thickness of the coat. When it dries, it doesn’t feels uncomfortable or stiff on the skin to the point where it cracks. It’s a very easy, wearable finish. The bamboo stem particles become more visible as they rise to the surface when it’s dry, together with the chemical exfoliant willow bark, offering an optional physical version upon removal. The brand suggests omitting this step if your skin is sensitive, but I love a good scrub so wasn’t about to miss the opportunity to get the full benefit from this product. You can see the microbeads in the texture below.

Adding a little water reverses the product back to a softened state, allowing it to be massaged off. The microbeads deliver a noticeable but gentle exfoliation that polishes the skin. I do this for a minute or so, adding more and more water to the surface until it is totally rinsed away.

Naked Klay 2 In 1 Detoxifying Exfoliating Mask Texture
The result… brilliant! I love this mask. It provides me a luxurious detoxifying experience with the additional benefit of smoothness and softness. It’s always comfortable, no stinging or tingling, no tightness during wear time and no dryness afterwards. In fact, my skin feels soft, smooth and hydrated upon removal, even when I wear it past fully dry (which I try to avoid with clay masks). It’s a truly beautiful experience. Using it 2-3 times a week is ideal for those with oilier complexions, while drier skin types may find that 1-2 applications will suffice to help keep pores clean. Personally, my skin is nearing normal with slight oiliness in the T-zone and I enjoy using this twice a week.

My skin not only feels great but it looks better. The pores appear tighter (at least for the short term) and any redness or discolouration seems to fade as the skin takes on a fresh brightness. What more could you ask of a clay mask?

the conclusion

The Naked Klay 2 In 1 Detoxifying Exfoliating Mask is nothing short of a luxurious product. A quality, vegan ingredient list really delivers on its claims with a gentle product that leaves my skin soft, smooth, hydrated, bright and even. It comes highly recommended!
