the science

The star of the formula is what I’m From call their Honey Complex, an array of 7 ingredients, five derived from bee products which makes up around 30% of the formula. These five are rich in active components such as flavonoids, phenolic acid, phenolic compounds, terpenes and enzymes.

Propolis Extract is a combination of resin (50%), beeswax (30%), enzymes and tree sap used by bees to seal, disinfect and waterproof their hive. It’s additionally excellent for the skin, used medicinally to help heal wounds for centuries. Rich in flavonoids, propolis displays powerful antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. Its high antioxidant content also assists to keep free radicals from causing cell damage. It works to regenerate and moisturize skin, helping make it smooth, supple and hydrated while also being a good acne treat by enhancing skin balancing. Bee Venom is said to replicate the effect of being stung by a bee (without the pain). This results in an increase in blood flow that can stimulate collagen and elastin production for a plumper appearance and a perceived reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. Like propolis, Honey displays strong antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a great detoxifying agent while also protecting the skin and helping to prevent premature aging. As a humectant, it draws and retains moisture for increased skin hydration and suppleness. Royal Jelly is a white and viscous substance, a gland secretion from worker bees. Comprising proteins (including royalactin), carbohydrates, lipids, mineral salts and vitamins, it’s a superfood that is solely consumed by the queen bee, hence her longevity. On the skin it exudes antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects to help soothe and calm. Bee Pollen is a combination of pollen from plant anthers and a small secretion from salivary glands or nectar. It contains proteins, amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids, fatty acids, phenolic compounds, enzymes and vitamins. It exhibits antioxidant properties to maintain skin youthfulness and also helps to build collagen synthesis promoting firmness. The remaining two components of the complex are Cinnamon Bark and Turmeric Root Extracts. They can help to moisturise dry skin and relieve skin conditions such as acne and eczema with anti-inflammatory support.

Interesting that the ingredients following water at the highest concentrations are synthetic liquids used primarily for their emollient, lubricating and texture enhancing properties. These include Octyldodecyl Olivate and Octyldodecanol, the latter additionally helping to prevent oil and water based components in the formula from separating while C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate and silicone Cyclopentasiloxane contribute a silky feeling.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) is a superstar ingredient that acts as a restorative agent. It helps to brighten skin by inhibiting melanin production and is also an effective treatment against hyperpigmentation. Niacinamide can improve the appearance of enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, fine lines and dullness plus strengthen the skin surface.

There are also some humectants like Glycerin and Levan plus fatty acids at play that contribute moisture and softening effects. Butylene Glycol improves their absorption while providing similar benefits. Adding another hydration dimension, Candelilla Wax works by forming a protective seal.

Helping to boost collagen production and keep ageing at bay are Arginine and Adenosine, effective treatments against lines and wrinkles. Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) has healing and antioxidant powers to decrease the effects of sun damage and reduce the appearance of lines. It also enhances the skin’s ability to repair itself, speeding up cell turnover with an increased ability to remove accumulated dead and damaged skin cells. As a result, hyperpigmentation and acne scarring are eased by breaking up dark spots and rejuvenating dull skin for a brighter complexion and improved texture. Olive Leaf Extract is also packed with antioxidants so offers similar protective properties.

Offering anti-inflammatory and soothing behaviour are renowned botanical extracts such as Ziziphus Jujuba Seed and Boswellia Serrata Extracts (gum resin). A rich source of amino acids, beta carotene, fatty acids and phytochemicals, Centella Asiatica Extract (Cica) is the queen of soothing ingredients. It’s a superstar acne treatment as it displays powerful anti-inflammatory behaviour that can speed up the healing process, reduce acne blemishes and prevent scarring. Additionally, it’s a competent anti-ageing ingredient which helps to improve elasticity and the synthesis of collagen while also serving as an antioxidant to protect against free radicals. This function is supported by Madecassoside, a primary compound of Cica.

Completing the formula are fragrance ingredients including Synthetic Fragrance, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Limonene, Citral and Geraniol.

the performance

As always, I’m From impresses from the onset. This creams comes in a stunning hexagonal heavy glass jar with round black plastic screw top lid and protective inner cap. That together with the embossed print on the outer box mimic the iconic honeycomb pattern, visually highlighting the hero ingredients. The jar includes the brand name on the base in raised print adding another element of sophistication to presentation. The cream has a silky and glossy white appearance that is instantly appealing so aesthetically, this product ticks all the boxes. The only thing to note regarding the packaging is that the print used to display the expiration date at the base of the jar rubs off with continued handling. It completely wiped off within two weeks of using the product. As such, if you throw away the outer packaging, it’s worth taking note of it (perhaps on the paper label) for future reference. The product boasts a cruelty free status and an affordable price tag of USD$32 per 50g.

The cream is quite luxurious in terms of texture. It is mildly dense so pretty peaks are retained when the product is scooped out. It spreads over the skin with ease. Regarding absorption, it has that covered too. Provided you don’t apply it straight over a previous layer that hasn’t fully absorbed, it sinks in well without any stickiness. I find it takes too long to absorb if I mix it with an oil, so prefer to apply my oil and cream separately. A very slight initial tackiness dissipates quickly.

One of the main negative features of this product is the added fragrance. Several ingredients are included at the end of the INCI to enhance the product smell however, these can be sensitizing to some and as I have always stated, I prefer my skincare fragrance free. For the record, I had no negative reaction to the formulation whatsoever, although the resultant scent didn’t appeal to me. It smells kind of soapy or a bit like an old fashioned powder which lingers for quite a while after application, even after full absorption. I really notice it when applied just before bed, the scent seeming more obvious as I lie there without distraction. So, anyone who dislikes fragrance in skincare won’t appreciate the fade time. It didn’t bother me per se, but I would prefer it omitted.

The Honey Complex will impress anyone that loves bee derived ingredients in their skincare like I do. It’s got it all – honey, propolis, bee venom, bee pollen and royal jelly, together providing an incredibly powerful moisturising and healing effect, enhanced by anti-inflammatory botanical extracts including Centella Asiatica. It seems contradictory to create a cream with hero ingredients to appeal to sensitive folk and then counteract that with a whole lot of fragrance elements…

Unfortunately the review time was short for this product so I have only been using it for two weeks. As such, it’s impossible to confirm any improvement in fine lines and I have also found it difficult to detect any brightening in that period. There is a good amount of Niacinamide in the formula which suggests it is a probable outcome. However, it’s worth noting that I already use vitamin C and niacinamide in my routine so such effects may or may not be obvious to the eye.

I'm From Honey Glow Cream
This cream is a wonderful moisturiser. It’s luscious and lovely on the skin and although it feels a little rich, I have been happily using it day and night for a fortnight during spring without discomfort. It’s not the sort of cream I would reach for in summer as it’s a bit too heavy for my normal to combination skin. This is perfect for all other seasons however. Normal to dry skin types will love this day and night. Not so sure about sensitive skin types as bee products can cause allergic reactions and fragrance elements can be sensitizing so definitely patch test first if you fall into either category.

The fact that it hydrates so effectively will in itself have anti-ageing benefits, plump skin reducing the appearance of fine lines and also enhancing the skin barrier to slow the formation of wrinkles. So over the long term, these benefits may be realised. Although it is very early in the game, I do feel like I have seen a slight improvement in elasticity and skin texture while using this cream. Time will tell just how effective it is at helping to slow the ageing process but initial impressions are very good. Finally, it plays well with other layers and makes a great primer for makeup, leaving the skin smooth to favourably accept sunscreen/foundation layers that may follow.

Does it impart a glow as the name suggests? Hard to say at this early stage. I didn’t see an overnight glow but it’s also difficult to measure, particularly since my routine prior to introducing it already addresses these concerns. I think it would be a more obvious benefit to someone introducing skincare with such benefits for the first time.

the conclusion

This cream is a beautiful moisturiser with elegant texture and long lasting results. Other than the added fragrance, I really can’t fault it.
