The HelloSkin Jumiso First Skin-Lightening Mask claims to be a super high quality essence packed, breathable sheet mask made of the mildest 100% cotton yarn that exhibits superior adhesion to the skin. It offers quick absorption, brightens and nourishes with salmon roe to improve the complexion of lackluster, dull and dry skin.
There are several ingredients in the essence that address the product’s primary purpose which is to lighten and brighten the skin. What would a lightening mask be without a good dose of Niacinamide ? A well tolerated form of Vitamin B3, Niacinamide is a restoring ingredient that offers multiple skin benefits. In a lightening product such as this, it works by inhibiting melanin production. It is an effective treatment against hyperpigmentation at concentrations of at least 2% and provides a strong defense against the appearance of discolouration and age spots. Niacinamide is also able to improve the appearance of enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, fine lines, dullness and to strengthen the skin surface.
Swiss Alpine plant extracts deliver effective skin lightening enhanced by anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to soothe and even out skin tone and dark patches. Collectively, they are known as Gigawhite and comrpise the extracts of Peppermint Leaf, Cowslip, Mallow Flower, Lady’s Mantle, Lemon Balm, Yarrow and Speedwell. Gigawhite has been shown to effectively treat hyperpigmentation, dark circles, age spots, sun damage and also deliver general skin lightening.
A whole host of other natural extracts support these functions. Noteworthy is what HelloSkin calls the Red Berry Complex which includes Raspberry, Cranberry, Japanese Cherry, Wild Cherry and Pomegranate Extracts. They are antioxidant rich, helping to keep skin radiant and protected from premature ageing. They also exhibit high water content to both hydrate and flush out toxins for vibrant, clear skin.
One of the highlighted ingredients in the mask is Salmon Roe. Due to its large water content, omega-3 fatty acids and highly saturated lipids, it exhibits strong hydration properties. Furthermore, Salmon Roe is packed with amino acids, vitamins and minerals responsible for preventing dullness and drying while helping to even out skin tone and improve skin texture.
Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate and Tocopheryl Acetate are strong antioxidants, stable forms of Vitamins C and E respectively. The former also helps the brightening cause by preventing hyperpigmentation and senile keratosis. Among substantial benefits of Vitamin E are its ability to promote healing, strengthen the skin’s barrier function and reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
There are also Ceramides (Ceramide NP and Ceramide NS) included for their water-retention capacity, providing skin replenishing and restoring benefits. Soothing, healing, moisturising and balancing properties bring Shea Butter and Aloe Vera into the formulation, both ideal treatments for dry and damaged skin.
A huge array of humectants are included, namely Glycerin, Betaine, Xylitylglucoside, Anhydroxylitol, Xylitol, Calcium Pantothenate and 1,2-Hexanediol. These are water-binding ingredients that have the ability to fill the spaces between the connective fibers resulting in a plumping effect. They help with moisturization, wound healing and replace some of the water lost in the dermis.
Supportive ingredients in the essence enhance the performance of actives. A fair concentration of a substance called Methylpropanediol is present, an organic glycol. Together with Butylene Glycol they enhance the penetration of active ingredients.
Water, Glycerin, Methylpropanediol, Niacinamide, Betaine, Xylitylglucoside, Anhydroxylitol, Xylitol, Malva Slvestris (Mallow) Extract, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Extract, Primula Veris (Cowslip) Extract, Alchemilla Vulgaris (Lady’s Mantle) Extract, Veronica Officinalis (Speedwell) Extract, Melissa Officinalis (Lemon Balm) Leaf Extract, Achillea Millefolium (Yarrow) Extract, Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Fruit Extract, Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Fruit Extract, Cornus Officinalis Fruit (Japanese Cornelian Cherry) Extract, Prunus Serotina (Wild Cherry) Fruit Extract, Punica Granatum Fruit (Pomegranate) Extract, Salmon Egg Extract, Calcium Pantothenate, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Pyridoxine HCI (Vitamin B6), Maltodextrin, Silica, Sodium Starch Octenylsuccinate, Ceramide NP, Ceramide NS, Triethylhexanoin, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Butylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Xanthan Gum, Carbomer, Scutellaria Baicalensis (Skullcap) Root Extract, Ethylhexylglycerin, Glyceryl Caprylate, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Caffeine, PEG-32, Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5), Allantoin, Dehydroacetic Acid
The HelloSkin Jumiso First Skin-Lightening Mask comes in an easy tear, foil backed pouch soaked in essence. The cotton sheet mask is lined with a light mesh layer to prevent it tearing upon removal and application.
Tear open the pack, remove the sheet mask. Gently unfold and place the mask over your face with the mesh on the outside. Once patted in, remove the mesh layer and discard. Wear for 15-20 minutes, remove sheet and tap in the essence.
The essence has a mild floral scent.
An expiry date is printed on each individual mask packet, mine dated November 2020. So, these have more than a 2 year life span. Single use application requires no best by date after opening.
I haven’t used any of the HelloSkin masks before so this was a first for me. The seriously cute presentation conceals sophisticated, quality packaging. The five masks come in a tidy box. Each individual mask is firmly packaged into an aluminium foil sealed packet for ultimate freshness. The pouch tears easily ensuring the product inside is not damaged.
The mask is soaked in essence, too much for it to hold, with around 5ml able to be extracted from each packet and conserved for later use. The essence has a floral scent although no additions for fragrance are apparent. I find it mild and non-irritating and it dissipates after a minute or two. It is clear, viscous and looks/feels like a serum, ampoule or thick hydrating toner.
The mask is presented in two layers. A light mesh lines the cotton to allow easy, tear free unfolding and protected application. It gently peels away once the mask has adhered to the face. The remaining 100% cotton layer is soft and gentle on the skin and adheres very well, stubbornly staying in place until you choose to remove it. Well placed cuts in the cotton permit moulding to the shape of your face. Suggested wear time is 15-20 minutes, but I allowed up to three times that duration.
Excellent adherence allowed me to sit on a couch watching TV like the lady on the pack or go about my daily routine without it slipping away or dripping. The instant it touched my face, I felt a cooling sensation that was consistent until removal. It was almost like the mask had been refrigerated. I imagine the refreshing attributes of peppermint would contribute to this sensation. It was cool but not so cold that it was uncomfortable at any stage, rather quite soothing and calming. This characteristic suggests it would be ideal for those suffering reddened, inflamed or aggravated skin.
I leave the mask for up to one hour to ensure it absorbs as much of that lovely essence as possible. Even after extended wear time the mask is still quite wet. There’s just too much essence for my face to absorb. After peeling it away, I pat the remaining essence into the skin until the surface is dry. An instant, clear boost of hydration and brightness is immediately observed, confirming the brightening effects of Niacinamide, Gigawhite and the Red Berry Complex. My skin feels and looks bouncy and my tone is refreshed, even and more youthful. It looks like I’ve just given my face a steam treatment.
Given the number of hydrating and moisturising agents in this product, it would definitely agree with dry, ageing and normal skin types while some astringent properties of botanical extracts would also invite acne sufferers and those with an oily complexion. The only group that would require a patch test would be those with sensitive or compromised skin given the array of natural extracts, some, like peppermint, known to be potentially sensitizing.
Delivering a hydration and brightening boost, the HelloSkin Jumiso First Skin-Lightening Mask lives up to its claims and satisfies my expectations. Skin is bouncy, refreshed and bright after any length of wear time. The five pack is also good value for money.
