the science

Represented at the highest concentration, Jojoba Seed Oil is composed of 97% wax esters. This oil/wax resembles human sebum ensuring easy absorption into the skin for superior moisturisation without clogging pores. Additionally, this characteristic helps regulate sebum production and balance facial oils. Important for skin cell regeneration, it is rich in natural Vitamin A while essential omega 6 and 9 fatty acids to help repair and regenerate skin cells.

Grape Seed Oil is anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial so a great choice for treating skin conditions such as acne and irritation. Protection is enhanced with antioxidant properties (from Proanthocyanidin) while high amounts of omega fatty acids help to make skin softer and stronger. It can even out tone with consistent use as well as protect the skin from UV damage. Meanwhile, Squalane, (another natural component of human sebum), assures absorption without greasy or oily residue. Derived from olives, it comprises three major antioxidants, namely, Vitamin E, Polyphenols and Phytosterols, for ultimate protection against free radicals and restorative function. It is said to deeply penetrate the skin for intense hydration. Emollient properties help trap moisture to keep skin soft and supple. Improved moisture retention assists to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Soybean Oil exhibits a small molecular structure for deep penetration, enabling it to stimulate elastin and collagen synthesis. It is rich in Vitamin E, essential fatty acids and lecithin which benefit the skin when applied topically by encouraging healthy cell growth, protection and repair.

Aloe Vera Leaf Extract can soothe skin and serves as an anti-inflammatory as well as acting as a moisturiser. Tocopherol (Vitamin E) adds antioxidant power which is also boosted by the star ingredient, Chlorophyll, derived from Alfalfa sprouts. Chlorophyll also gives the serum its attractive green hue. Anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties help to fight acne and reduce breakouts.

Co-Enzyme, CoQ10 (also known as Ubiquinone) is a powerful antioxidant that is naturally found in our bodies, but like Squalane, levels decrease with age. CoQ10 boosts skin repair and regeneration, plumps skin and reduces free radical damage. This results in an improvement in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and a healthy glow. It is therefore a super force against ageing.

Bergamot and Neroli Oils exhibit antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties to help treat skin conditions such as acne. They also impart a sweet, distinctive citrus scent.

Note, Jojoba, Grapeseed, Soybean and Bergamot oils are cold-pressed and Neroli is steam-distilled. The formula is cruelty free, vegan, gluten free and fully sourced in Australia.

Since publishing this review, a new formula has been released, superseding the original. Soybean Oil, Aloe Vera Leaf Extract and Bergamot Peel Oil have been replaced by Brassica Oleracea Italica (Broccoli) Seed Oil, Medicago Sativa (Alfalfa) Extract and Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed oil. These replacements boost antioxidant and emollient effects.

I have used the new version and have updated the performance assessment below to reflect both releases.

the performance

I have to start with presentation as the appearance of this serum was the first thing that attracted me to it. The elegant glass bottle is clear, enabling the gorgeous green hue to permeate through contributing to totally beautiful aesthetic appeal. This product is simply gorgeous. The clarity of the glass implies it is not subject to light degradation, however, as with all my serums, I store it in a dark drawer or cupboard to maximise preservation.

The dropper is an effective dispensing mechanism although it can be a little fiddly to remove since it has a child proof lock. (Note, the new version has removed this feature and is much easier to open/close). Drops are released in a controlled way so it is easy to use the appropriate amount, which I set at around 4-5 drops to cover face and neck. The serum retains a light texture, not heavy and viscous, rather just a little thicker than water. The natural scent is pleasantly present but not overpowering, primarily derived from citrus oils. It has an overall herbal smell with fresh citrus undertones. Smell lingers until the serum has been absorbed, a fairly quick process given the oils in the formula are sebum like and highly compatible with natural skin composition. Note, essential oils are at the bottom of the ingredient list so their concentration is expected to be quite minimal. However, I would advise patch testing first if you are sensitive to essential oils. Personally, as I don’t have any problem with such ingredients, I find the scent they impart an enhancement of the product’s sensory experience.

In terms of results derived from twice daily use, this serum is a winner. I absolutely love it! I immediately feel the impact of suppleness and hydration as soon as I apply it and this sensation pleasantly and effectively lasts between applications. My skin feels extremely soft and supple when I have this in my routine, bounciness and glow the outcome. The brand encourages users to take their 7 day challenge which promises to rebalance skin. Well, I didn’t count the days, but I can tell you this serum impressed me immediately. I have normal to combination skin with a little excess oil often building up during the day along the vertical centre of my face. Since including this in my routine, I can honestly say that oil production has been a lot more even across my entire face and dry patches along my jaw line eradicated. Within a few days, my skin was supple and soft, hydrated and dewy, oils even and controlled. This is a sheer pleasure to incorporate.

I have also used this product prior to makeup application and as promised, it gives foundation a dewy and healthy finish.

the conclusion

The Dewy & Bae Raw Glow is simply a pleasure to include in my routine. I love to look at it, use it and enjoy the benefits that it delivers of dewiness, hydration, bounciness, suppleness and glow. This is one of the best oil serums I have tried and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone (excluding those highly sensitive to citrus oils).
