the science

Dominating the formula is a big hit of Glycerin, a humectant that is capable of drawing water to the skin to keep it looking fresh and plump. Butylene Glycol supports this function while also promoting good absorption for the actives in the formula. Glyceryl Acrylate/Acrylic Acid Copolymer is just a common polymer with glycerin attached to it. It’s purpose is to form a hydrogel that will sit on the surface of the skin to provide moisturisation. Complementing this function is Propanediol which is able to soften and soothe the skin by forming an occlusive film to prevent water loss.

Botanical extracts are carefully chosen for their calming and protective benefits. Traditionally used in Asian medicine for its healing ability, Centella Asiatica Extract (Cica) is a diverse ingredient offering anti-inflammatory effects to ease irritation and acne while restorative behaviour stimulates new cell growth, builds collagen and improves circulation. Boosting this behaviour due to antiseptic and antibacterial properties is Tea Tree Extract. A potent antioxidant, Green Tea Extract joins Bioflavonoids to help protect against environmental damage which in turn will help to slow the ageing process. Soothing properties stem from Cica also having anti-inflammatory capability. Antioxidants in Jasmine Extract provide protection against environmental stressors while chemical properties help to even skin tone and moisturise without clogging pores.

Hydrating ingredients include Aloe Vera Leaf Extract, a great moisturiser which helps to keep skin hydrated and eliminate flaking and dryness. This is supported by Sodium Hyaluronate which is able to hold more than 1000 times its weight in water. Matricaria Flower and Lavender Extracts are also anti-inflammatory and antibacterial in nature so work well to calm skin and relieve acne. With potential to irritate, it should be noted that the oil form of lavender is more likely to aggravate sensitive skin due to fragrance components than the extract. Meanwhile, Broccoli provide antioxidants and fatty acids to boost protection, soothe and soften the skin. High protein content in Yulmu Seed Extract leaves skin elastic and radiant. Finally, adding natural fragrance to the product, Eucalyptus Leaf Oil is an essential oil known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities.

the performance

Commleaf has really nailed the presentation of this line. The beauty of the aqua blue glass packaging is second to none. The pentagonal jar is topped with a chrome lid featuring the brand logo, adding another touch of elegance. There is also a spatula included which eliminates the need to scoop the product out directly with your fingers. It is somewhat jelly like in texture, so it’s actually a bit tricky to dispense without a spatula as it slides around a lot.

As such, the perfectly smooth finish of this gel displays the most effortless glide. It’s also beautifully transparent and bouncy so really looks elegant in its aqua glass packaging. This jar choice additionally implies the product isn’t light sensitive although I always keep it out of direct sunlight.

Commleaf Skin Relief Perfect Moisture Cream Texture
There is nothing artificial added for fragrance however one of the last ingredients in the formula is eucalyptus leaf oil which together with antibacterial properties also contributes its scent to the gel. It’s not overpowering, rather quite subtle and for me is a refreshing, clean smell that I enjoy. It’s tempting to over apply because it is so lovely on the skin, immediately imparting a cooling effect on application. I have in fact often used too much but a little massage and it sinks in without sitting on the surface. It leaves a slight film that traps in moisture and prevents it escaping for an instant plumping effect. This also makes a good base for makeup.

Commleaf Skin Relief Perfect Moisture Cream
It feels so very lightweight and bouncy that I really look forward to application. Initially, I saved this for the summer as I thought a gel cream wouldn’t have the staying power or hydration ability of a heavier option. I was totally wrong! Don’t be fooled, this is an excellent year round moisturiser. It has seriously surprised me how well it works to keep my skin plump and healthy. It actually performs like a sleeping mask at night, providing long lasting hydration while during the day, it feels fresh and light yet retains the moisture in my skin until night time.

As for recommendations, I think this would suit all skin types. The fresh gel texture will delight oilier complexions while even the driest of skin will appreciate the super boost in hydration that it delivers. Sensitive folk will also enjoy the fact that it’s a clean INCI without alcohol, artificial fragrance or harsh ingredients. For the record, mine is primarily normal with slight combination tendencies, typically in the T-zone.

the conclusion

The Commleaf Skin Relief Moisture Cream is such a lovely moisturiser for any skin type in all conditions. What it lacks in weight, it makes up for in hydration. It’s the perfect combination of lightweight texture and effortlessly absorption to deliver plump skin. I really love it!
