the science

The essence within these pads is water free and dominated by Propolis Extract which is basically a combination of beeswax, enzymes and tree sap used by bees to seal, disinfect and waterproof their hive. It has been used medicinally to help heal wounds for centuries. Rich in flavonoids, propolis displays powerful antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. Its high antioxidant content assists to keep free radicals from causing cell damage. It works to regenerate and moisturize skin, helping make it smooth, supple and hydrated. It also assists to balance skin oils so is a good acne treatment.

Next in concentration, Butylene Glycol assists to increase the penetration of other ingredients and hence boost their effectiveness. It also helps thin product consistency and to draw moisture from the air back into the skin cells, adding support to more prominent humectants such as Glycerin and Betaine. Vitamin B5, Panthenol, is an effective skin penetrator, able to reach into the lower layers for deep skin cell absorption and effective moisturisation. Some research indicates that it may also provide anti-inflammatory benefits that can counteract acne causing bacteria.

Rose Flower Water is simply water scented or distilled with essential oil from the Rose plant (the hydrosol is steam distilled and more potent in delivering benefits). It exhibits soothing, cooling and anti-inflammatory properties, ideal for sensitive skin or that suffering acne, redness and irritation. Astringent behaviour helps to tighten pores and reduce their appearance. Furthermore, benefits are provided in a pH balanced solution.

Sodium Hyaluronate helps to hydrate the skin through an ability to bind to water and fill the spaces between connective skin fibres, achieving a plumping effect. Similarly, Allantoin and Ceramide NP are included for their water-retention capacity, providing skin replenishing and restoring benefits. Able to enhance dry and damaged skin with high fatty acid content, Hydrogenated Lecithin reduces flaking and restores suppleness.

Often appearing together, Cetearyl Olivate and Sorbitan Olivate are collectively known as Olivem 1000. Olivem 1000 is a self-emulsifying multi-functional ingredient made of fatty acids chemically similar to the lipidic composition of the skin surface. It provides a deep moisturizing effect.

Hydrolyzed Collagen is a protein that is readily absorbed by the body. It is broken down into amino acids called peptides that help to boost collagen synthesis. Glutathione is known for its powerful antioxidant activity, able to neutralize free radicals that can accelerate ageing. Furthermore, it can brighten skin by interrupting melanin synthesis.

Chamomile Oil displays calming, antiseptic and antibacterial properties to guard against inflammation and conditions such as acne and redness. A collection of essential oils complete the formula and include Rosewood, Rose Geranium, Lavender, Grapefruit Peel, Orange Peel, Sandalwood and Rose Flower Oils. Essential oils are included for their fragrance and also exhibit additional beneficial properties. They can however be irritating to those with sensitive skin.

Rosewood Oil comprises 90% Linalool which has tissue regenerating properties that can help prevent premature aging and wrinkles. Rose Geranium Oil can help balance sebum production which can lead to improved skin elasticity. Lavender Oil offers anti-inflammatory benefits and can also be effective at treating acne. Similarly Grapefruit Peel and Orange Peel Oils contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which can help fight free radicals and soothe skin by reducing redness and inflammation. Citrus Oils are toxic to bacteria so make an effective acne defense. Sandalwood Oil is especially good for soothing dry skin or balancing oily skin. It is effective at minimising the appearance of pores and softening skin with emollient properties. Finally, the star oil of this product is Rose Flower Oil. This ingredient exhibits excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities. It’s great for quenching dry skin and also offers astringent properties to strengthen acne, redness and inflammation defense.

the performance

These moisture pads are nicely packaged in a simple container although no dispensing spatula is included. Regardless, I don’t think I would have used one even if it was included as unlike hydrogel patches that require assistance to cleanly separate, these cotton pads are quite easily removed with the fingers. The container is lightweight and highly portable, without risk of essence leakage. I used these every other day so it took me around 8 weeks finish them. The seal was sufficiently tight that none of the essence appeared to evaporate, the last pad as fully drenched as the first.

The scent is unmistakably rose as you would expect. It is not a synthetic overwhelming perfume, rather derived from the delicate flower’s essential oil. As such, it is and smells natural and therefore, quite pleasant. The pads are heavily soaked in the essence, more than I ever found myself using. I managed to apply them to my face, neck, chest and backs of hands and still felt like there was moisture being discarded.

Each has an embossed side and a smooth side, the former supposedly adding a gentle exfoliation effect. Given how soft these were to apply, I really didn’t see any difference in application or effect regardless of which I used. Both were highly satisfying and refreshing. Upon gliding over the skin, I felt immediate, cool relief. The sensation is very satisfying and lasts until the essence is fully absorbed. This cooling effect instantly reduces the skin temperature which has an automatic anti-inflammatory effect.

The essence is packed with soothing and hydrating ingredients and this shows in the performance. Sweeping this pad across my face delivers both the hydration of a good toner as well as the soothing effects of an essence. It offers the convenience of combining cleanse-tone-essence actions in one step without fuss. Although I generally prefer to separate these steps and address them with specific products which target those particular functions for a more thorough routine, I have to admit, these pads do a very good job. My skin feels clean, fresh, calm and hydrated after using them. You can also apply them like a mini mask on specific areas of the face for a deeper effect.

I enjoyed using these first thing in the morning before exercise. It gave my skin a refreshed feel without having to unnecessarily cleanse and potentially strip my skin. It also plumped with excellent hydration. I just added a sunscreen once it had fully absorbed and I was good to go. Alternatively, I might apply them after work when I want to remove makeup but am not ready to perform a full evening routine. A simple cleanse and swipe sees me satisfied until night time. Another option is to perform a regular double cleanse and just layer toner. When it’s time for the evening routine, I just swipe a pad to pick up any dirt or impurities accumulated since and continue with my actives. These are my favourite ways of using this product but given its versatility, I think there are many options to suit each user.

The only negative aspect to these pads is the price. At USD$25 for only 30 pads, it seems a little excessive and I’m not sure the convenience justifies the cost.

the conclusion

This is the first product that I have used from Commleaf. Although they are not something I apply daily, these pads are invaluable for times when I need to speed up the process or want to refresh my face but am not ready to perform a full routine. My combination skin loved them. I think irritated and inflamed skin will appreciate their calming effects while drier types will enjoy their hydrating nature. Those with sensitive skin should be mindful of the essential oils.
