the science

One of the main benefits of this mask is antioxidant protection. Although Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) is a potent antioxidant, however, listed as the last ingredient in the INCI, it is unlikely to have much effect. Responsible for delivering this benefit and featured at more significant concentrations are botanical ingredients. Cherry Blossom Extract is a potent antioxidant with soothing anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to heal and protect skin from free radical damage and hence premature ageing.

Boosting anti-inflammatory strength and helping to control sebum production is Lavender Extract. It provides antibacterial properties to help achieve clear skin by reducing the severity of breakouts while also lessening acne scarring and uneven pigmentation. Bergamot Leaf Extract is highly antiseptic so also helps to treat acne and skin conditions. The Menthol in Peppermint Leaf Extract has a cooling effect and also helps to brighten dull skin. It too improves pore health and sebum control to prevent congestion and blemishes. Further anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiseptic and soothing effects are delivered by Freesia Refracta, Matricaria Flower and Rosemary Leaf Extracts. These plant extracts may contribute a natural aroma to the essence, although fragrance is also added. They can also be sensitizing so should be introduced with caution.

Humectants, Glycerin and Butylene Glycol enhance hydration, the latter also assisting to increase the penetration of other ingredients. Meanwhile emollients such as Isopentyldiol, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate and Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride help to reduce water loss for more supple skin texture. Another great moisturiser is Allantoin while Arginine additionally stimulates collagen promotion.

The remainder of the formula consists of thickening agents, emulsifiers, texture enhancers and preservatives.

the performance

Typical of such a product, each mask is enclosed in an air tight pouch, the set of ten presented in an attractive cardboard pack. I really like the graphic design of this mask, it’s unique but on trend for a young market. It’s also very affordable, each mask priced at USD$1.50 or AUD$2.10.

The pouch is easy to rip open. Within, the sheet is folded over on itself a few times for fit (as shown above). There is no protective inner lining to assist with unfolding but after using most of the sheets, I can conclude none of the masks ripped when unraveling and application was quite simple.

B-Liv Sakura Bliss Sheet Mask Remaining Essence
The reason for this is that the sheet itself is made of a tough eco-friendly tencel fabric which by definition is a natural cellulosic fibre obtained from wood pulp. It’s fully biodegradable too. The fabric is soft but extremely strong, hence there is no need to protect it with a separator film. It fits really well too. It’s particularly good where a lot of others fail, securing nicely around the nose without lift. There isn’t an excess of material hanging in any direction either so it’s very comfortable to wear. There’s enough fold over to accommodate different sized faces too. It adheres well and stays in place for the entire wear time without any need for patting down or adjustment.

The essence is milky in appearance and quite thick in texture. There is a bit of added fragrance (second last on the INCI) but overall, the scent is quite subtle. It has a slightly floral/medicinal smell which I didn’t mind, although as usual, I do prefer my skincare fragrance free. However, I didn’t notice it while wearing and in my case, caused me no irritation.

There is plenty left in the pouch which I usually smear on my neck, chest and arms. Each sheet is drenched and still feels wet following removal after the recommended wear time of 20 minutes. Upon placing the sheet on the face, the cooling sensation is instant and constant. My skin felt cool and almost cold over the 20-30 minutes. So, it definitely has a positive impact for inflamed skin, providing a continuous cooling sensation.

B-Liv Sakura Bliss Sheet Mask Essence
The essence absorbs well with a little patting once the sheet is removed. It isn’t sticky and only tacky for a short time, the residue quickly dissipating. As well as being great for inflammation, this mask delivers a hydration boost that is instantly apparent. Skin looks and feels more plump, even and healthy, an effect that lasts for a few hours.

I also found that this mask did a lot for oil control. My combination skin felt well balanced and this effect lasted most of the day. It would be of great benefit to oily and acne prone skin types.

There are also antioxidant benefits claimed, however, protection and anti-aging effects are impossible to measure without stringent lab conditions and lengthy trials so I will refrain from making any judgement on this. Suffice it to say antioxidants in the formula are capable of neutralising free radicals to prevent premature ageing and are also on the skin for a reasonable amount of time so as to be capable of imparting this benefit.

B-Liv Sakura Bliss Sheet Mask Tencel Fabric
In terms of use, this mask would really suit oilier complexions who may appreciate its oil balancing properties. All skin types can benefit from the additional moisture it provides. The exception is of course those sensitive to fragrance or any of the botanical inclusions.

B-Liv Sakura Bliss

the conclusion

I found this mask really enjoyable to use. Its effects while wearing were consistent, cooling and calming the entire time and removal confirmed a moisture boost, oil balance and a more even complexion. At under AUD$2.10 a sheet, these are a bargain!
