the science

Botanical waters make up the bulk of the formula. Aloe Vera extract displays anti-inflammatory behaviour to help soothe damaged, inflamed and irritated skin. It can be absorbed up to 7 layers deep to penetrate effectively for considerable cell absorption and moisturisation. This combined with enzyme activity also helps to rejuvenate tissues, promote collagen production plus cleanse and detoxify for healthy pores and skin. Similarly, Japanese Plum Water contains high amounts of vitamins, minerals and proteins. It penetrates deeply to keen skin hydrated and support moisture barrier function.

Second in concentration, Apple Fruit Water brings moisturizing, hydrating and nourishing properties. It has been shown to stimulate growth of human keratinocytes for an anti-aging and energizing effect. Tomato Fruit Extract is rich in carotenoids, namely Phytoene and Phytofluene which deliver unique anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and UV absorbing properties, the latter resulting in skin lightening through reduced melanin production. Antioxidant effects are strengthened by the presence of Lycopene to deliver a strong defense against oxidative stress. Tomato Extract also helps balance skin pH and regulate sebum.

Green Tea Extract is a potent antioxidant source that helps to protect skin from free radical damage, reduce inflammation, clear cell damage and repair wrinkles. Rich in Catechins, a group of natural compounds called Polyphenols (EGCG in particular) that protect against UV radiation and environmental stressors, green tea also helps to inhibit collagenase, the enzymes that break the peptide bonds in collagen, thus promoting skin firmness and elasticity. Skullcap Extract also provides antioxidant protection against sun damage as well as delivering a potent tyrosinase inhibitor which can down regulate melanin production for a whitening effect. Ginkgo Biloba Leaf, Yucca Root, Lithospermum Officinale Root and Licorice Root Extracts have soothing qualities for sensitive skin and antioxidant properties. Licorice is also packed with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties making it suitable for treating skin conditions. A natural skin lightening ability improves blemishes and dark spots. Bamboo contains 70% natural silica, an organic compound that helps to keep skin looking healthy, supple and radiant. Packed with amino acids and flavonoids, it also provides antioxidant protection. By reinforcing the moisture barrier, it further reduces bacteria penetrating to improve acne and damaged skin.

β-Glucan is a polysaccharide sugar derived from yeast. It is able to stimulate collagen production, accelerate wound repair, soothe and calm irritated and inflamed skin, moisturise and fight the signs of ageing. Its humectant effect is supposedly 20% more hydrating than hyaluronic acid, able to lock in moisture while simultaneously preventing transepidermal water loss.

Plant oils combine with botanical waters to create a bi-phase product. The one dominating the formula is from the Jojoba Seed. Easily absorbed, it offers excellent hydration without leaving any residue, greasiness or clogging pores. High levels of fatty acids allow it to retain and enhance skin moisture. Then there’s the fragrant oils that also impart anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antifungal properties to deliver a good treatment from problem skin. These include Bergamot, Rosewood, Sandalwood,Rose Flower and Lavender Oils.

the performance

This is my first product from sister brand to Whamisa, Australian made Ausome. The Rehydrating Double Mist is marketed with vibrant coloured packaging to get your attention. It looks bright and exciting so definitely achieves this objective.

The spray bottle itself is typical of face mists. Looking at the product when it’s left standing for a few minutes, it’s easy to see the yellow layer of oils settling above the botanical waters which are a murky white, resembling lemon squash. The obvious layering disappears without a trace when the bottle is lightly shaken, the contents merging and the colours fusing to a soft yellow. They remain this way while misting and fairly quickly separate again into their respective layers. This only takes a few minutes.

The mist has the most divine scent. It’s totally intoxicating. Very appealing to me as I am a lover of citrus and lavender and combined, they are irresistible! The smell is not overpowering or strong, rather light and refreshing. Even though the essential oils are at the lower end of the ingredient list, if you are sensitive to such inclusions, I would probably avoid this product or as a minimum, patch test before using.

For me, other than the formula and efficacy of a mist, the key differentiating factor of a spritzing product like this is the quality of the nozzle and the way the mist disperses. This mist measures up to the best of them! The spray is light, fine and soft and the spread is perfect! One spritz and the entire face is evenly covered and refreshed.

I adore the ingredient list which is confirmed gentle by both CosDNA and EWG resources. The fact that this is made with a base of botanical waters from aloe vera, apple and plum makes a noticeable difference from standard water based products. You can really feel the added hydration and immediate soothing effect as it seeps into the skin. The product absorbs fast and disappears without a trace. There is no residue, tackiness, stickiness or oiliness. My face feels instantly cooled and refreshed after application. As Jojoba oil is non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores), it is a superb choice for a bi-phase mist such as this. It resembles human sebum in molecular structure, so its inclusion simply eases dryness while the botanical waters soothe dehydrated skin. It’s a wonderful combination and particularly great for those with normal to dry skin, which is the recommended range. Mine is combination and I simply love it. Personally, I think this is ideal for all skin types, perhaps with the exception of sensitive (due to essential oils).

I like to use mists throughout the day rather than as part of my routine. Only if a mist is particularly heavy (perhaps like the Hemish Bulgarian Rose Mist Serum), might I consider using it otherwise. Instead, I prefer to use dedicated toners, essences and serums morning and night. However, this Ausome mist is particularly lovely straight out of a hot shower to give my face a boost of moisture before toning. While testing, I used this mist throughout the day and over makeup to help with setting. It works particularly well on both fronts and I intend finishing the bottle in a similar fashion.

The only negative with this product is the price. I usually spritz 2-3 times with other mists but found I only needed a single spray with this one. As such, although it is pricy, I expect it to last at least twice as long as other mists of a comparable volume.

the conclusion

I found the Ausome Rehydrating Double Mist to provide a refreshing boost of moisture throughout the day. It is a sensory sensation, the scent, something I don’t normally consider important in a skincare product, absolutely winning me over. It is so refreshing, fresh and crisp. It has earned its place as my favourite mist.
